Heart
Where: The Cuthbert Amphitheater
When: 7:00 PM Tuesday

Red Velvet Car - the most personal and powerful work yet from Ann and Nancy Wilson - takes generations of Heart fans on what truly feels like the musical ride of a lifetime. Powerfully produced by Ben Mink - who previously worked with Ann Wilson on her acclaimed 2007 solo album Hope & Glory - Red Velvet Car is an thoroughly electrifying song cycle of largely acoustic-based sound and a stunning album with a true and renewed sense of purpose.

As Ann Wilson put it, "Here we are at this point in the band's history and just like with any lifespan, the longer you love, the longer things look in back of you - and shorter in front of you too. That sense of perspective means that you're much less likely to want to waste any time at all. So there's a even greater sense of mortality, of the stakes involved here and an even stronger desire to make every moment on the album matter."

The result on Red Velvet Car is an album of breathtaking intimacy and honesty.

If Jupiter's Darling was built upon Nancy Wilson's guitar collaboration with Heart's Craig Bartock, Red Velvet Car was founded on Nancy's acoustic guitar chemistry with Ben Mink. Together, they kick up the sort of sparks that conjure up the same acoustic fire that Led Zeppelin had once upon a time. "I think that's where Ben Mink and I really match each other as players," explains Nancy Wilson. "Because I've played a very rocking acoustic guitar in a big rock band setting for so long, I don't play a shy acoustic if you know what I mean. And Ben has that same ability. There's so much expression you can get out of an acoustic guitar especially when it's well recorded. Ben and me were playing and say, "Wow, were we separated at birth?" There's some nice electric guitar on the album too, but for instance, "There You Go" is heavier because there isn't an electric track, and so you hear every grain of wood.

Kina Grannis
Where: W.O.W Hall
When: 8:00 PM Tuesday

Kina started playing shows at the age of four in front of her stuffed animals. Now she plays in front of people, though it wasn't the quickest transition for the admittedly shy songstress. While attending college at USC, Kina often retreated to the secluded stairwells around campus where she could write and sing without being heard. Protected by their quiet confines, she found a safe haven and a creative outlet for her music. Armed with a guitar and a cup of tea, Kina wrote in every stairwell she came across. And it was within these stairwells that she developed her confidence as a songwriter and her poise as a performer.

In 2007, Kina joined YouTube, made a music video and entered herself into a contest. A few months later, her video for "Message From Your Heart" aired during the Superbowl and its 97 million viewers (or 194 million eyeballs, depending on how you're keeping track) and she walked away with a record deal. Since then, Kina has regularly posted her songs on YouTube, amassing many millions of views, and toured throughout North America. Her songs have been heard on television shows such as ABC's General Hospital and MTV's College Life.

Kina independently released her first full-length album, Stairwells, on February 23, 2010. Her music is both sweet and melancholy, but always filled with hope. She'd want you to know that she saves drowning honeybees from pools whenever she gets the chance.

Atmosphere
Where: The McDonald Theatre
When: 7:00 PM Wednesday

With special guest Blue Print; Grieves & Budo feat. DJ Rare Groove opening.

Eleven years after becoming the first hip-hop act to put the Twin Cities on the map, Atmosphere has grown into one of the most accomplished MC/producer duos around. Between Slug and Ant, they've released six albums, 11 Sad Clown tour albums and various side-projects like Felt - amounting in well over a million units sold. And along the way have performed to sold-out crowds everywhere from modest sized venues in their hometown to colossal festivals in Japan. Since releasing their 1997 debut, Overcast!, Ant's ASR-born melodic beats and Slug's open book and observational style of rapping continues to evolve into hip-hop that's more honest - more textured. And the praise for these Rhymesayers pioneers hasn't stopped flowing in.

Repackaged, remastered and uglier than ever, the critically acclaimed third official studio release from Atmosphere, God Loves Ugly, is back after being out of print for over a year. The God Loves Ugly re-issue also features a FREE bonus DVD.

Originally released as the limited Sad Clown Bad Dub 4 (The Godlovesugly Release Parties) DVD, it features 2 hours of live performance footage, backstage shenanigans, several special guest appearances and music videos for "Godlovesugly", "Summersong" and "Say Shh". Out of print for years, this DVD has been repackaged in a custom sleeve that comes inserted in with the re-issue of God Loves Ugly.

GIUSEPPE VASI’S ROME: LASTING IMPRESSIONS FROM THE AGE OF THE GRAND TOUR
Where: The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art
When: Wednesdays 11 AM - 8 PM | Tuesdays & Thursdays thru Sundays 11 AM - 5 PM

Opening Reception:
Free Opening Reception, Friday, September 24, 6 p.m.

Giuseppe Vasi, best known as the teacher of Giovanni Battista Piranesi, was one of the leading printmakers of the 18th century. Vasi captured Roman street- and cityscapes with an eye for the daily comings-and-goings of both the aristocrat and the beggar, and his images became well-known icons for travelers during the Age of the Grand Tour. Co-curated by James Tice, Professor of Architecture, and James Harper, Associate Professor of Art History, the traveling exhibition presents Vasi's pictorial prints of Rome and the work of fellow artists of the period. A unique aspect of the show is an interactive digital kiosk that displays and precisely locates more than 200 of Vasi’s views in the meticulously detailed map of Rome by the cartographer Giambattista Nolli, based on research made possible by Kress and Getty Foundation grants.

Giuseppe Vasi’s Rome: Lasting Impressions from the Age of the Grand Tour is organized by the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, University of Oregon, Eugene.

The exhibition is made possible with major funding from the University of Oregon Office of the Provost and additional support from Jim and Adriana Giustina, Sylvia Giustina, and Natalie Giustina Newlove in memory of Lee Giustina; Nancy and David Petrone; Tim and Lisa Clevenger; the Coeta and Donald Barker Foundation Changing Exhibitions Endowment Fund; the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts; the William C. Mitchell Estate; the University of Oregon School of Architecture and Allied Arts; the Italian Cultural Institute; the Oregon Humanities Center; and JSMA members. Media Partner: Eugene Magazine.

Railroad Earth
Where: The McDonald Theatre
When: 7:00 PM Sunday

With special guest Toubab Krewe opening.

Acoustic guitar/lead vocalist Todd Sheaffer: "When we started, we only loosely had the idea of getting together and playing some music. It started that informally; just getting together and doing some picking and playing. Over a couple of month period, we started working on some original songs, as well as playing some covers that we thought would be fun to play." Shortly thereafter, they took five songs from their budding repertoire into a studio and knocked out a demo in just two days. Their soon-to-be manager sent that demo to a few festivals, and - to the band's surprise - they were booked at the prestigious Telluride Bluegrass Festival before they'd even played their first gig. This prompted them to quickly go in and record five more songs; the ten combined tracks of which made up their debut album, "The Black Bear Sessions."

That was the beginning of Railroad Earth's journey: since then, they've released three more studio albums, two on Sugar Hill Records (2002's "Bird In A House" and 2004's "The Good Life") and one on SCI Fidelity (2008's "Amen Corner"). They've also amassed a huge and loyal fanbase that follows them from show to show, taking advantage of the band's liberal taping policy. But RRE bristle about being lumped into any one "scene." Not out of animosity for any other artists: it's just that they don't find the labels very useful. As Carbone points out, "We use unique acoustic instrumentation, but we're definitely not a bluegrass band - so that doesn't fit. And I think the term 'jam bands' probably refers more to the fans than to the bands. I think these fans just like live music."

Railroad Earth certainly thrives in a live setting, as their stunning 2006 live album, "Elko," is certian proof of that. It's no secret that improvisation is one of the RRE's big strengths. But what really sets them apart is the strength of their songwriting. It was the strength of those first five songs that got them on the bill at Telluride. And they've only gotten better since then.

Benise: The Spanish Guitar
Where: The Hult Center - Silva Hall
When: 8:00 PM Saturday

The Spanish Guitar is an epic tale that will transport the audience to such exotic places as a Parisian café, a Flamenco tapas bar in Spain, an Arabian desert, a Venetian masquerade ball, and the cobblestone streets of old Havana.

This new show will feature Benise's guitar as protagonist, as it becomes the keeper of the stories of glory and tragedy through time and worlds gone by. Brilliantly choreographed dance numbers and orchestral pieces accompany the stories from inside this magical instrument.

While taking place on an ever-changing stage, Benise's new show will feature real video footage from his travels around the globe. The cultures and experiences Benise encountered on his voyage were the inspiration for the new music, dance, and costumes featured in The Spanish Guitar.

The Emmy Award-winning cast from the PBS Special "Nights of Fire" includes dancers carefully handpicked from a global pool of some of the most brilliantly diverse talent to be found. Traditional Flamenco dancers, Broadway performers, and soloists previously featured with Madonna, Gloria Estefan, and Ricky Martin have all joined forces to make up The Gitanas, Benise's female dancers.

The Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band with Larry and his Flask
Where: W.O.W Hall
When: 8:00 PM Sunday

There aren't a lot of Warped Tour vets who can claim proficiency in the use of washboards, bottleneck slides and five-gallon buckets. Most didn't spend their teens playing along to Charlie Patton and Bukka White albums. And just about none are fronted by a commissioned member of the Honorary Order of Kentucky Colonels.

But the Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band, who appeared for two weeks on the 2009 Warped Tour and will be on the entire 2010 tour, are all that and more. With wild sing-a-longs and flaming washboards, their live shows have been converting skeptics left and right.

Now, with the May 25 release of "The Wages," the soulful, swinging country-blues trio proves they're more than just a world class live band. Their second album for SideOneDummy Records, it was produced by Paul Mahern (Zero Boys, John Mellencamp) and recorded in the band's Big Damn Tradition: live in the studio with no overdubs on honest-to-goodness analog tape.

Appropriate to our times, "The Wages" is thematically rooted in the blues tradition of hard-bitten reality matched with enduring optimism.

he Big Damn Band is very much a family affair, with the good reverend on finger-style resonator guitar and lead vocals, his wife "Washboard" Breezy Peyton on washboard and vocals, and distant cousin Aaron "Cuz" Persinger on drums and bucket. The band's home base is deep in the hills of Southern Indiana's Brown County, which boasts a population of 14,957. (Or 14,954 when the band's out on the road playing close to 250 gigs a year, including appearances at the Austin City Limits festival and tours with Flogging Molly, Derek Trucks, and Clutch.)
