Vampire Weekend
Where: The McDonald Theatre
When: 8:00 PM Tuesday

With special guest Beach House opening

Vampire Weekend is an American indie rock band from New York City, formed in 2006 and signed to XL Recordings. The band released their eponymous debut album on January 29, 2008 and it produced the singles "Mansard Roof", "A-Punk", "Oxford Comma", and "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa". The band's most recent album, Contra, was released on January 11, 2010.

The members of the band met while attending Columbia University; they then self-produced their first album after graduation while concurrently working full-time jobs. Vampire Weekend's name is derived from lead singer Ezra Koenig's amateur film of the same name. (http://vimeo.com/28464) He spent time with friends in Waltham, MA. Koenig and drummer Chris Tomson first collaborated as members of the comedy-rap band "L'Homme Run". They are managed by Ian Montone, who also manages The White Stripes. They were signed to XL Recordings, of which the band said in an interview: "Before any labels had contacted us, we actually mentioned XL as the kind of label we'd ideally like to end up on. Just going on their roster alone, they obviously have good taste and support their artists well."

The Budos Band with Basin & Range
Where: W.O.W Hall
When: 8:00 PM Saturday

On August 10, 2010, Daptone Records will release The Budos Band III, the long-awaited follow-up to 2007's The Budos Band II. Conceived during weekly, beer-fueled writing sessions in their dank Staten Island rehearsal space, sharpened to a fine point on the road - more than 150 live gigs over the last two years - and recorded during an intensely productive 48 hour period in January 2010, The Budos Band III is chock full of the type of tough sonic nuggets that have long earned The Budos Band the title, "the quintessence of Staten Island soul."

Having scalded listeners' ears with sonic lava on Budos I and stung them with venomous frequencies on Budos II, The Budos Band delivers on their promise to spread the epidemic of "Budos Fever" far and wide with the release of The Budos Band III. And, if there was ever any question whether the brotherhood of The Budos is instrumental afro-soul royalty, the Chateau de Budos that graces the back cover of The Budos Band III assures all that the group is strong - unstoppable even - and will use all of nature's power to ascend to their rightful throne.

Basin & Range is a constantly evolving entity, difficult to label, undeniably funky, occasionally reckless and sure to get your body moving in ways you cannot practice. These four misfits draw on a wide variety of influences, merging elements of funk, psychedelia, hip hop and dirty electro-grit into a sound that is wholly original. Instrumental by nature, B&R has been wrecking dance floors all over the Northwest since 2005, bringing a new spin on instrumental dance music.

Bruce Molsky
Where: Jaqua Concert Hall - The Shedd
When: 7:30 PM Friday

With great pleasure, The Shedd Institute welcomes Bruce Molsky back to the Jaqua Concert Hall for an evening of unforgetable traditional music.

Alone or with fellow musicians; guitar, fiddle, or banjo in hand, Bruce Molsky has been exploring traditional music from an astonishingly broad range of cultures over the past two decades - synthesizing them and refracting them through his own evolving sensibilities to the point where the sources of his inspiration transform themselves into a sound that is uniquely his. While most identified with traditional American old-time music, Molsky's influences range from the Appalachian soul of Tommy Jarrell to Delta blues; from the haunting modal strains of Irish music to the rhythmically nimble music of Eastern Europe.

Atmosphere
Where: The McDonald Theatre
When: 7:00 PM Wednesday

With special guest Blue Print; Grieves & Budo feat. DJ Rare Groove opening.

Eleven years after becoming the first hip-hop act to put the Twin Cities on the map, Atmosphere has grown into one of the most accomplished MC/producer duos around. Between Slug and Ant, they've released six albums, 11 Sad Clown tour albums and various side-projects like Felt - amounting in well over a million units sold. And along the way have performed to sold-out crowds everywhere from modest sized venues in their hometown to colossal festivals in Japan. Since releasing their 1997 debut, Overcast!, Ant's ASR-born melodic beats and Slug's open book and observational style of rapping continues to evolve into hip-hop that's more honest - more textured. And the praise for these Rhymesayers pioneers hasn't stopped flowing in.

Repackaged, remastered and uglier than ever, the critically acclaimed third official studio release from Atmosphere, God Loves Ugly, is back after being out of print for over a year. The God Loves Ugly re-issue also features a FREE bonus DVD.

Originally released as the limited Sad Clown Bad Dub 4 (The Godlovesugly Release Parties) DVD, it features 2 hours of live performance footage, backstage shenanigans, several special guest appearances and music videos for "Godlovesugly", "Summersong" and "Say Shh". Out of print for years, this DVD has been repackaged in a custom sleeve that comes inserted in with the re-issue of God Loves Ugly.

Stacey Earle and Mark Stuart "Drive her 'til she drops" & Lowtide Drifters
Where: Axe and Fiddle - 657 East Main St., Cottage Grove, OR
When: 8:30 PM Friday

Critically acclaimed husband and wife duo Stacey Earle and Mark Stuart will bring their lively and captivating blend of folk-country songwriting and story-telling to the Axe and Fiddle on Friday, September 24th. Since 1992, they have toured throughout the U.S.A., Europe, and Canada, averaging 170 performances a year. Their 2010 tour finds them on a mission to drive their loyal 1999 Chevy Suburban to the West Coast and back one last time before it is officially retired. To assure anyone worried that their trusty ride will not make it, Stacey and Mark write on their website that "Our Chevy Suburban has seen us safely up and over the Rockies in snow storms and ice. She has never failed to arrive at a gig on time. She is the crew!"

Stacey Earle and Mark Stuart met in Nashville, Tennessee in 1991 and they have been inseparable ever since-writing songs, raising children, touring, and achieving a high amount of respect for their consummate stage performances. Stacey Earle, the sister of alt-country singer Steve Earle, has released a number of solo albums, including Simple Gearle, which the New York Times listed in 2000 as one of its "Favorite CD's You Nearly Missed." Mark Stuart, one of the most skilled guitarists in the Americana scene, is also an accomplished songwriter, Left of Nashville (2008) being his latest release. Together, they own and operate Gearle Records, an independent record label which has released their solo offerings and their exquisite duo albums such as Never Gonna Let You Go (2003) and S&M Communion Bread (2005).

For those who have never seen Stacey and Mark live, this will be a wonderful opportunity to enjoy their poignant songs about love, family, and everything in between as they stop in Cottage Grove on their way to Portland and Seattle. The Low Tide Drifters, a folk band from Eugene, will open the show at 8:30 p.m.

Railroad Earth
Where: The McDonald Theatre
When: 7:00 PM Sunday

With special guest Toubab Krewe opening.

Acoustic guitar/lead vocalist Todd Sheaffer: "When we started, we only loosely had the idea of getting together and playing some music. It started that informally; just getting together and doing some picking and playing. Over a couple of month period, we started working on some original songs, as well as playing some covers that we thought would be fun to play." Shortly thereafter, they took five songs from their budding repertoire into a studio and knocked out a demo in just two days. Their soon-to-be manager sent that demo to a few festivals, and - to the band's surprise - they were booked at the prestigious Telluride Bluegrass Festival before they'd even played their first gig. This prompted them to quickly go in and record five more songs; the ten combined tracks of which made up their debut album, "The Black Bear Sessions."

That was the beginning of Railroad Earth's journey: since then, they've released three more studio albums, two on Sugar Hill Records (2002's "Bird In A House" and 2004's "The Good Life") and one on SCI Fidelity (2008's "Amen Corner"). They've also amassed a huge and loyal fanbase that follows them from show to show, taking advantage of the band's liberal taping policy. But RRE bristle about being lumped into any one "scene." Not out of animosity for any other artists: it's just that they don't find the labels very useful. As Carbone points out, "We use unique acoustic instrumentation, but we're definitely not a bluegrass band - so that doesn't fit. And I think the term 'jam bands' probably refers more to the fans than to the bands. I think these fans just like live music."

Railroad Earth certainly thrives in a live setting, as their stunning 2006 live album, "Elko," is certian proof of that. It's no secret that improvisation is one of the RRE's big strengths. But what really sets them apart is the strength of their songwriting. It was the strength of those first five songs that got them on the bill at Telluride. And they've only gotten better since then.

Flaming Lips
Where: The McDonald Theatre
When: 9:00 PM Wednesday

The Flaming Lips are an American rock band, formed in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma in 1983.

The band is known for their lush, multi-layered, psychedelic arrangements, spacey lyrics and bizarre song and album titles-for example, "Psychiatric Explorations of the Fetus with Needles", "Free Radicals (A Hallucination of the Christmas Skeleton Pleading with a Suicide Bomber)" and "Yeah, I Know It's a Drag... But Wastin' Pigs Is Still Radical". They are also acclaimed for their elaborate live shows, which feature costumes, balloons, puppets, video projections, complex stage light configurations, giant hands, large amounts of confetti, and frontman Wayne Coyne's signature man-sized plastic bubble, in which he traverses the audience. In 2002, Q magazine named The Flaming Lips one of the "50 Bands to See Before You Die".

The group recorded several albums and EPs on an indie label in the 1980s and early 1990s. After signing to Warner Brothers, they scored a hit in 1993 with "She Don't Use Jelly". Although it has been their only hit single in the U.S., the band has maintained critical respect and, to a lesser extent, commercial viability through albums such as 1999's The Soft Bulletin (which was NME Magazine's Album of the Year) and 2002's Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. They have had more hit singles in the UK and Europe than in the U.S. In February 2007, they were nominated for a BRIT Award in the "Best International Act" category. As of 2007, the group has collected three Grammy Awards, including two for Best Rock Instrumental Performance.
